Stefan Blumentrath works as a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) in the field of geospatial environmental modelling. He holds an engineer Ph.D. in environmental planning from the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hannover and a Diplom Engineer degree (equivalent to Master degree) in environmental planning from the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University of Hannover. He has more than 15 years’ experience in advanced spatial analysis and modeling within the fields of ecology and environmental planning. Being an environmental planner by education, Stefan has a strong background in mapping- and valuation-methods used for environmental and spatial planning purposes, with a special focus on computer aided methods. In this context he acquired significant and broad ICT skills and also works on remote sensing for mapping ecosystem characteristics. Stefan is an active member of the OSGeo community and contributes to the development of Open Source Geospatial Software, mainly the GRASS GIS project where he is a member of the core development team since 2018.
